Biography

Maxwell McCarthy
is a dramaturg for contemporary dance based in Berlin, Germany. Since graduating with a BA in Contemporary Performance Practice from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in 2008, Maxwell has worked as a professional dancer and dance-maker for over fifteen years, and has been working full-time in dramaturgy for contemporary dance since 2019.  Over the course of his career, he has collaborated with choreographers, theater makers, and visual artists on over 30 new works, including Colette Sadler, Alfredo Zinola, Stuart Meyers, Stephan Herwig, Anna Konjetzky, Miet Warlop, Aernout Mik, and Tino Sehgal. Maxwell is a member of Tools for Friction, a new Berlin-based collective of dance dramaturges and producers, as well as a participant in Meeting Point Dramaturgy, a series of conferences between emerging dramaturges in Germany hosted in collaboration with Sopehiensaele, Kampnagel, and Hellerau. Since 2020, Maxwell has been co-leading a long-term project between dance and ecology called Punctures, in collaboration with the choreographer Alfredo Zinola, and producer Micaela Kühn. Punctures is an artist-led project that aims to transform undervalued land in the agricultural landscape into a network of land rich in biodiversity. Essential to the project, Punctures is also an attempt to understand and share the experiences from the land through the lenses of choreography, production, and dramaturgy.
