Biography

Sonya Levin began her education in Moscow in 1997 studying contemporary dance, ballet, acting and music, then later studied Butoh dance technic at «School of Dramatic Art of Anatoliy Vasiliev» and starting from 2006 collaborated with leading dance companies, independent artists, state theaters and institutions in Moscow. Continued her education at «SEAD» Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance where she graduated from two programs: performance major and choreography major. Since 2011 based in Berlin.
Staged her first own works «Black Out» in 2008 and «The Superman's Last Supper» in 2009, followed by further own creations: «The Day Before» 2010, «The Game Has No Name» 2011, «Rocking Stars» 2011, «Morning Glory» 2014, «left I - right I» 2014, «Interiorisation III» 2015, «80 Years Underground» 2015, «Madonna’s Milkshake» 2020 and others.  These works were presented on festivals like: «Tanztage» Berlin, «Lucky Trimmer» Berlin, «100 Grad Berlin Festival», «NET» International Festival Moscow, «Züricher Theater Spektakel», International Theater Festival «MESS» Sarajevo, «New Faces - New Dances» Salzburg, «BE Festival» Birmingham, «Plums fest» Moscow etc.  and venues like: «Sophienseale» Berlin, «HAU» Berlin, «Gorki Theater» Berlin, HZT Berlin, «GARAGE» Moscow, «V-A-C» Moscow, «MUAR» Moscow Museum of Archetecture and many others.
As performer worked with: Jule Flierl, Constanza Macras «DORKYPARK», Tino Sehgal, Jérôme Bel, Amanda Piña, Trajal Harrell, Yvon Chabrowsky, Marcela Giesche, «Tanween Company», «Po V.S.Tanz» dance company and many others.
In repertoire pieces in «Thalia» Theater Hamburg during the season 2019/2020 and in «Volksbühne» Berlin during the season 2021/2022.
Worked as a choreographer in drama theaters in Russia: «Chekhov Moscow Art Theater» 2015, «Moscow Drama Theater named after Pushkin» 2015, «Theater of Nations» 2016, Theater «PRAKTIKA

«Theater .DOC» 2009; and Germany: «BallhausOst Theater» Berlin 2013, «Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus» 2012  2015-2017. Curator, teacher and lector of the «COTA» - an educational research program in the field of contemporary choreography in Moscow.  2014-2017 Jury member of the «Lucky Trimmer» festival Berlin.  Awarded with «The Best Performer in Dance» at «ACT Festival» Bilbao for the piece «The Day Before» 2012, with «DanceWEB» scholarship by Jardin d'Europe 2013 and «The Golden Mask» - the main Russian National Theatre Award for the piece «Cinderella» 2015.
